Craft Brewed Belgian Style Wits

Wits are a Belgian Style wheat beer traditionally brewed with a portion of un-malted wheat and oats, and spiced with citrus peel and coriander. Medium-light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and refreshing finish which can include a touch of tartness.

Wits originated in Belgium decades ago, then faded to near extinction with the rise of German Style lagers. Hoegaarden remained as one of the only brewers of the style, and their brewer Pierre Celis started a resurgence of the style in America over two decades ago at Celis Brewery in Austin. Celis was sold to Miller, then sold again, but during that time other craft brewers took grasp of the style and fantastic fresh brewed versions are now available all across the U.S.

Craft brewers love to modify this style by using an array of spicing ingredients and by brewing higher strength versions. Some adventurous brewers are using barrel-aging and secondary fermentations with wild Brettanomyces yeasts.

Wits are very popular as warm weather seasonal beers and for may breweries, part of their year-round line-up.
