Berliner Weisse

Craft Brewed Berliner Weisse Beers

Full Sail Berliner Weisse

austin beerworks einhorn

Berliner Weisse beers are tart, sour, light-bodied and refreshing, with flavors of wheat and citrus. Long periods of aging allow refined sour flavors to develop during fermentation with lactobacillus souring strains. Brettanomyces wild yeast is also used by many brewers to add another layer of tart and earthy flavors.

Decades ago the style was booming in popularity in Germany, before fading to near obscurity within the last decade. A strong resurgence is happening now with craft brewers as consumer demand for complex sour flavored beers grows.

Berline Weisse beers are brewed with a high proportion of wheat and are typically under 5% ABV, with some beers in the range of 2-3%. There is almost no hop presence in these beers. Some brewers are adding fruit and spices to enhance the flavor profiles of these sour beers.
