Brazil Craft Brewery Profile: Cervejaria Colorado

Bottles of craft beer from Cervejaria Colorado, a Brazilian craft brewer recently showed up at the local beer store. We picked up all three of the varieties which were available. The first thing we noticed, after the cool labels, was the incorporation of local ingredients into all three of the beers. Always a good sign to see unique and relevant local ingredients added to craft beer.

Bertho was the first beer we tried. A strong (8% ABV) Nut Brown Ale brewed with local Brazil nuts. The beer poured with a thick and creamy off-white head and a fantastic deep-reddish brown color. Aromas included sweet caramel, toasted nuts, and mild fruitiness. The beer has a medium body and creamy texture, with smooth flavors of caramel and a mild, pleasant nuttiness. Overall, a very nice beer which we would be glad to drink again.

vixnu imperial ipa brazil

Vixnu is their Imperial IPA, which weighs in at 9.5% ABV, and is brewed with local Radadura Cane Sugar. The beer poured a bright orange-copper color with a creamy white head. Aromas included passion fruit, peach, and sweet malt. Despite the high strength, the beer is still medium-bodied, with the sugar helping to thin out the heaviness from a high amount of malt used to brew it. The flavor is fruity and sweet, with moderately high hop bitterness in a smooth finish. A nice addition to a highly competitive Double and Imperial IPA market.

guanabara brazil stout

Guanabara Imperial Stout was the final beer from the tasting. This beer pours opaque black with a thick and creamy tan head. A strong beer, at 10% ABV, which is brewed with local Black Rapadura Sugar. Aromas included roasted coffee, burnt sugar, and molasses. The body is on the high end of medium, and flavors of blackened sugar, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and dark fruit all come through. The finish is slightly sweet with moderate hop bitterness. A very good Imperial Stout with a unique flavor profile.

As of July 2013 their bottled beers are available in three U.S. states: Illinois, Ohio, and Texas. Imported by Artisanal Imports.

Cervejaria Colorado has been brewing craft beer in Brazil since 1995. Their brewery is located in Riberão Preto, and visitors are welcome. (+ 55 11 3941-4949)
