The marriage of chocolate and spicy chiles with the rich roasted flavors of stouts is another great trend in craft beer. Imperial Stouts are the most popular style of stout brewed with chocolate and chiles for flavoring. These big, full-bodied beers can absorb and blend in the rich chocolate and spicy chile flavors. Some of our favorite Chocolate Chile Stouts are listed below.

Cigar City Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout (11%) | World class Imperial Stout aged with cacao nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon, Ancho chiles, and Pasilla chiles, in oak bourbon barrels. Rich, roasty and earthy with smooth flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak, bourbon, and chile spice. Released once a year at a special brewery event. One of the original beers to kickstart the trend of this style. Brewed in Tampa, FL.

Prairie Artisan Ales – Praire Bomb (14%) | Imperial Stout aged on cacao nibs, chili peppers, coffee beans, and vanilla beans. Incredibly rich and smooth, with the high alcohol level well hidden. Fantastic beer from a relatively new brewery out of Oklahoma. Prairie also produces a great line of Saisons fermented with wild Brett yeast.

Westbrook Mexican Cake (10.5%, 50 IBUs) | Imperial Stout flavored with cacao nibs, habanero peppers, vanilla beans, and cinnamon sticks. Intensely flavorful with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, spice, and sweet malt. Brewed in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Hardywood Chocolate Heat (9%, 50 IBUs) | Double Chocolate Stout brewed with cacao nibs, habanero peppers, and lactose milk sugar. Rich, creamy, and chocolaty with some spice and heat from the chiles. Brewed in Richmond, VA.

Perennial Artisan Ales Abraxis (10%, 80 IBUs) | Imperial Stout aged with cacao nibs, Ancho chiles, vanilla beans, and cinnamon sticks. Smooth and flavorful with a full-bodied malty profile and high hop bitterness for balance. Brewed in St. Louis, MO.

Night Shift Brewing Holy Mole! (8.5%) | Bourbon Barrel-Aged Belgian Stye Stout. Aged with cacao nibs and habanero peppers. Blended with a portion of Habanero Rye Strong Ale. Intense and spicy with rich flavors of chocolate, oak, and bourbon. Brewed in Everett, MA.

BrewDog DogB (15.1%) | Imperial Stout flavored with cacao nibs, coffee, and naga chiles. Full-bodied with flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, and earthy chiles. Brewed in Scotland.
