Peticolas Brewing Velvet Hammer Imperial Red Ale Review

Pours a deep ruby red color with a frothy off-white head.  Aromas of floral hops, dark fruit, and caramel malt.  Medium-full bodied with a strong backbone of malt which balances nicely with the high level of bitterness.  Smooth, and surprisingly easy to drink at 9% abv.  An impressive beer.

Hops: Simcoe, Centennial

Malts: 2-row, Caramel

Available year round on draft.

A great beer – and one of my favorite styles to drink. Similar to a DIPA but with more caramel malt character.

Hints of citrus and fruit in the aroma, and a big dose of caramel maltiness.

Bitterness level is right up there with a Double IPA, but the extra malt flavors make it a bit more balanced in the finish.

Peticolas nailed the style. Exactly what an Imperial Red should look and taste like.
