All Grain Imperial IPA Recipe

Profile: HomeBrew recipe for an Imperial IPA similar to Knee Deep Simtra Triple IPA. Strong and full-bodied with flavors of tropical fruit, pine, citrus, and dank earthy hops. Intense hop bitterness. Recipe uses a massive amount of hops which may cause issues with some brewing systems when racking the cooled wort from the boil to a fermentation vessel.



20 lbs Pale 2-row

1 lb  Crystal 40

12 oz. CaraPils


2 oz. Simcoe 13%a, at 60 minutes

2 oz. Citra 11%a, at 60 minutes

1 oz. Simcoe 13%a, at 30 minutes

1 oz. Citra 11%a, at 30 minutes

1 oz. Simcoe 13%a, at 10 minutes

1 oz. Citra 11%a, at 10 minutes

Other: Treat mash and sparge water with Gypsum if using soft water

YeastWhite Labs WLP001 California Ale or Wyeast 1056 American Ale

Dry-Hops: 1 oz. Citra, 1 oz. Simcoe


Mash all grains for 1 hour at 152 degrees.

Sparge at 170 degrees.

One hour boil.

Ferment at 65F.

Rack to keg or secondary and age for 8 weeks. Add dry hops for the last 10 days.

      After two weeks in the primary I added 30 seconds of pure oxygen and 3 more grams of 05 and let it sit for one more week than dry hopped into secondary for two weeks. ABV is 11%. I forced carb into a keg and bottled from there. Taste great!



    I was thinking about brewing this with WLP041. Does anyone have any experience with that yeast? What do you think?



    Gonna make this tomorrow had to tweak a little for alpha acids, my citra came in at 14.1%

    Drinking the real thing right now, can’t wait to drink my own!



      Hey Curtis, wondering if you’ve been able to taste what you made yet. Any good? Anything you would adjust?



        This is a great recipe. Kegged it last week. I only aged for a week in secondary before adding dry hops. I think the 8 weeks of aging would be to mellow out the Simcoe. I like Simcoe so no problems here.

      I’m assuming this recipe is really for a 10gallon batch. Is that right?



        It says 5 gallons, why would it be 10? (it is a triple)

          Correct – This recipe is for 5 gallons. The high alcohol percent requires a massive amount of grain to brew this beer.



            Gotcha, I did it as a 10 gallon batch before seeing responses here and it still came out delicious, lots of compliments. I will make it again as a 5 gallon batch. Thanks guys
