All Grain Black IPA Recipe

Profile: HomeBrew recipe for a Black IPA, similar to Maine Beer Weez. Dark IPA packed with citrus, pine, and fruity hop flavors. Balanced with flavors of dark caramel and light roasty malts. Dry finish with high hop bitterness.



5.5 lbs Maris Otter Malt

5 lbs Pale 2-row

1 lb Munich

8 oz. Crystal 80

8 oz Flaked Wheat

6 oz. Chocolate Malt

4 oz Black Barley

4 oz Midnight Wheat

Hops (Pellets)

1 oz. Warrior 15%a, 60 minutes

1 oz. Simcoe 13%a, 20 minutes

1 oz. Citra 11%a, 10 minutes

1 oz Cascade 6%a, 5 minutes

YeastWhite Labs WLP001 California Ale Yeast

Dry Hops: 1 oz Simcoe, 1/2 oz Citra


Mash all grains for 1 hour at 152 degrees.

Sparge at 170 degrees.

One hour boil with hop regimen above.

Ferment at 63-68 degrees.

Rack to keg or secondary and age for 5 weeks. Add dry hops for the last 7 days.

    Started mine about 4 days ago and is going strong. I scaled it back to brew a 3 gallon batch and, after looking at my calculations on beersmith, everything is on point except for the IBUs which are coming in over 100. Time will tell if it is well balanced or a total hop bomb.

    just tasting this. it’s a little young, only 14 days old! great balance, a mild citrus at the start, replaced by a roasted malt and mild chocolate finish. i don’t care for dry hopping with simcoe (tastes like onions) but it works well. thanks for posting. mike

    Brewed this and it’s delsicious. Scored 3rd in category in a local home brew comp. highly reccomend it
