All Grain HomeBrew Smoked Rye IPA Recipe

Profile: HomeBrew recipe for a Smoked Rye IPA, similar to Burnside Brewing Smoked Rye IPA. Medium-bodied with flavors of smoke, fruity hops, piney hops, and spicy rye malt. Intensely bitter finish.

Ingredients:

Malts

7.5 lbs Briess Ashburne Mild Malt

2.5 lbs Briess Cherrywood Smoked Malt

2.5 lbs Malted Rye

8 oz. Crystal 60

Hops (Pellets)

1 oz. Simcoe 13%a, 60 minutes

1 oz. Meridian 7%a, 45 minutes

1/2 oz. Simcoe 13%a, 30 minutes

1/2 oz. Meridian 7%a, 30 minutes

1/2 oz. Simcoe 13%a, 10 minutes

1/2 oz. Meridian 7%a, 10 minutes

Other: 12 oz Rice Hulls (help with sticky rye mash)

YeastWhite Labs WLP007 Dry English Ale  or Wyeast 1056 American Ale 

Instructions:

Mash all grains with rice hulls for 1 hour at 152 degrees.

Sparge at 170 degrees.

One hour boil with hop regimen above.

Ferment at 63-68 degrees.

Rack to keg or secondary and age for 4-5 weeks.

    Fun beer to brew. Nice balance of smoke and hop flavors/bitterness.

    Have this recipe a shot and it came out very good. Couldn’t get the Meridian hops though, so I substituted with Cascade. Nice moderate smoke and big bitterness.
