All Grain HomeBrew Recipe for a Black Session Ale

Profile: HomeBrew recipe for an easy drinking smooth session-style Black Ale. Chocolaty smooth with very limited roasty character. Fermented with yeast that works at ale temperatures but retains the clean character of a lager beer.

Ingredients:

Malts

8 lbs Maris Otter

8 oz. Carafa III De-bittered Black Malt

6 oz. Flaked Oats

6 oz. Crystal 80

4 oz. Chocolate Malt

Hops

1/2 oz. Magnum 14%a, 60 minutes

1/2 oz. Fuggles 5%a, 20 minutes

Yeast: Wyeast 2112 California Lager or White Labs WLP810 San Francisco Lager

Instructions:

Mash all grains for 1 hour at 150-152 degrees.

Sparge at 170 degrees.

One hour boil with hop regimen above.

Ferment at 63-65 degrees.

Rack to keg or secondary and age for 2 weeks. If possible do the two weeks as cold conditioning at refrigerator temp.

This is my first steam beer (tasted or brewed). I really like the smoothness of this, it’s like a black cream ale. I will definitely be steaming more beers! I used wyeast 2112
