IPAs and Sub-Styles to Celebrate With on National IPA Day: August 1, 2013
National IPA Day for 2013 is on Thursday, August 1st. The holiday is a celebration of one of the most popular styles of craft beer, IPA, or India Pale Ale. A base IPA is a hop forward beer with aroma and flavor profiles including citrus, tropical fruit, pine, spice, and earthiness. High usage of hops in IPAs also creates bitterness in the finish which can range from medium to very high.
The IPA style has expanded in the craft beer world and their are several types of IPAs produced by craft brewers, as well as sub-styles derived from IPAs. We’ll cover all of these and provide one outstanding example of each.
Aromas and flavors can include citrus, tropical fruit, pine, spice, and earthy notes. Finish is dry with medium to very high bitterness.
Green Flash West Coast IPA (7.3%, 95 IBUs) | Grapefruit, tropical fruit, and piney hop flavors. Brewed with Simcoe, Columbus, Centennial, and Cascade hops. | San Diego, CA
Hop-forward beers with higher alcohol and more malt than regular IPAs. Bitterness ranges from high to intense.
Russian River Pliny the Elder Double IPA (8.2%) | Intense hop flavors. Brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops. | Santa Rosa, CA
The strongest version of IPAs with alcohol levels of 10-15%. Intense hop flavors and bitterness.
Founders Devil Dancer Triple IPA (12%, 112 IBUs) | Dry-hopped with ten varieties of hops. Notes of tropical fruit, citrus, and alcohol. | Grand Rapids, MI
Dark, hoppy ales with vibrant hop aromas and flavors. Bitterness ranging from medium to very high.
Deschutes Hop in the Dark Black IPA (6.5%, 70 IBUs) | Piney and citrusy hop notes. Brewed with Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, and Citra hops. | Bend, OR
Pale and hoppy ales fermented with Belgian Wit yeast and often spiced with citrus peel and coriander. Medium to high hop bitterness.
Hopworks Pig War White IPA (6%, 60 IBUs) | Citrusy and floral with medium hop bitterness. | Portland, OR
IPA brewed with a portion of Rye Malt which adds a layer of spiciness to the beer. Medium to high hop bitterness.
Sixpoint Righteous Ale (6.3%, 57 IBUs) | Citrus, spicy rye, and toasted malt flavors. Medium hop bitterness. | Brooklyn, NY
IPA fermented with Belgian ale yeast which adds spicy and fruity notes to the beer.
Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp (7%) | Brewed with Columbus, Amarillo, and Centennial hops. Flavored with sweet orange peel. | Ipswich, MA
IPA brewed with a portion of smoked malt. Smoke flavors range from moderate to intense.
Golden Road Burning Bush IPA (8%, 70 IBUs) | Smoked IPA brewed with German smoked Rauch Malt. High bitterness. | Los Angeles, CA
IPA fermented with farmhouse or wild yeast strains. Earthy and funky flavors combined with hoppy notes.
Oxbow Funkhaus (7.5%) | Farmhouse IPA fermented with wild Brettanomyces yeast. | Newcastle, ME
Hardywood Hoplar (8.5%, 100 IBUs) | Imperial IPA aged on Virginia Tulip Poplar wood. | Richmond, VA
IPAs brewed with freshly harvested hops. Typically newly harvested and dried for less than a week.
Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale (6.7%, 67 IBUs) | Brewed with freshly harvested, dried New Zealand hops. Hops used with 7 days of harvesting. | Chico, CA
IPA brewed with freshly harvested hops that are still Wet. From the hop fields right to the brew kettle.
Surly Wet (7.5%, 90 IBUs) | Brewed with fresh, Wet Citra and Wet Simcoe hops. Grassy and resiny hop flavors. | Brooklyn Center, NY
IPA brewed with a significant portion of Wheat Malt. Wheat lightens the body and add some malt crispness.
El Segundo White Dog IPA (6.7%) | IPA brewed with 50% Wheat Malt. Hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Cascade, and Chinook. | El Segundo, CA

India Red Ale
Ruby red ales with high hopping levels, and caramel/toasted malt flavors.
Cigar City Tocobaga Red Ale (7.2%, 75 IBUs) | Flavors of citrusy hops and caramel malts. | Tampa, FL
India Brown Ale
Hoppy brown ales with enhanced hop character in aroma and flavor. Medium to high hop bitterness.
Terrapin Hop Karma (6%, 65 IBUs) | Brewed with Nugget, Chinook, Centennial, Willamette, and Columbus hops. Flavors of chocolate, caramel, and earthy/citrusy hops. | Athens, GA
India Pale Lager
Crisp, clean lager with enhanced hop aromas and flavors. Medium to very high hop bitterness.
Jack’s Abby Hoponius Union (6.7%, 65 IBUs) | Notes of tropical fruit and citrus. Clean, crisp, bitter finish. | Framingham, MA
India Dark Lager
Heavily hopped dark lager with bold hop aromas and flavors. Medium to high hop bitterness.
Jack’s Abby Cascadian Schwarzbier (6.8%, 70 IBUs) | Dark lager brewed with Magnum, Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, and Cluster hops. High hop bitterness in the finish. | Framingham, MA
