Karbach Brewing – Houston, TX Brewery
Karbach Brewing has been around for a few short years in the Houston craft beer market. Karbach offers a nice variety of year-round, seasonal, and special release beers. Their year-round selections include four IPA versions, a crisp lager, and a wheat beer. Seasonals include an American Pale Ale, Saison, Kolsch, and Oktoberfest.
Karbach also has a FUN series, which includes special release beers aged in wine and bourbon barrels. These special offerings have included a Holiday Spiced beer at 9% ABV, and an Imperial Porter at 11% ABV.
On a recent trip to Houston, we had the opportunity to pick up several of their beers and we’ll highlight some of our favorites below. You can see reviews for all their beers here.
Rodeo Clown is Karbach’s year-round Double IPA offering, and probably our favorite beer from them. The beer is massively hopped with seven different hop varieties in the brew kettle, then dry-hopped with Citra, Sapphir, and East Kent Goldings. The kettle hops include American, German, and UK varieties, giving the beer a complex hoppy profile with earthy, citrusy, piney, and fruity flavors. (9.5% ABV, 85 IBUs)
Karbach’s Summer Seasonal, brewed in the style of a German Kolsch. Crisp and light-bodied with mild malt flavors and low hop bitterness. Easy drinking, and a perfect session-style summer beer. (4.9% ABV, 20 IBUs)
Roshambo is a strong and flavorful Belgian IPA, brewed with Chinook, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Zythos hops. The beer has a big malty backbone, which includes Munich, Crystal, and a touch of Chocolate Malt. Hop flavors blend together nicely with the fruity Belgian yeast, leading into a smooth bitter finish. (8.5% ABV, 70 IBUs)
Hop Delusion is a limited release Imperial IPA with great aromas of pine, citrus, and berries, from dry-hopping with Simcoe and Mosaic hops. Fantastic hop flavors and a very high, but smooth bitter finish. (9% ABV, 100 IBUs)
The brewery offers tours on Monday and Friday evenings, and Saturday afternoons. Admission is $7, and includes free samples of their beer. The brewery is located on Karbach Street, and you can get contact info here.
Distribution has primarily been in the Houston market, but they have recently expanded into the San Antonio area.
