Triple IPA Beers and HomeBrew Recipes

Triple IPAs can also fall into the Imperial IPA classification. They are high alcohol, high bitterness IPAs, brewed with massive amounts of malts and hops. The Triple reference can come into play when comparing this style to a low ABV Session IPA, as they can be triple the strength and bitterness level of Session IPAs. The last section of the posting has a couple great Triple IPA clone recipes.

Craft Beers Sold as Triple IPAs

Founders Brewing classifies their Devil Dancer (12% ABV, 112 IBUs) as a Triple IPA. This extremely flavorful and aromatic beer is dry hopped with 10 different varieties of hops. 


Drake’s Hopocalypse Black Label (12%, 100 IBUs) is sold as a Triple IPA. This seasonal February release is brewed with Magnum, Chinook, and Zythos hops. The beer ha big citrusy hop flavors and notes of light caramel sweetness. 


Knee Deep’s Simtra Triple IPA (10.1%, 150 IBUs) is massively hopped with Simcoe and Citra hops, with very high hop bitterness in the finish. The beer is packed with tropical fruit, citrus, and piney hop flavors. 


Pliny The Younger (10.2%, 125+ IBUs) is probably the most well-known and sought after beer, tagged as a Triple IPA. The beer is brewed by Russian River out of CA, and uses Warrior, Centennial, Simcoe, Chinook, Columbus, and Amarillo hops in the brewing process.


Wicked Weed in Asheville, NC, offers their Freak of Nature Triple IPA (11%, 100+ IBUs) to fans of big, hoppy beers. Packed with citrus and fruity hop notes. Wicked Weed triple dry hops this beer for a huge blast of hoppy aromas.


Mission Brewery out of San Diego released a special one-time Triple IPA in February 2014, called 200 Human IIIPA (11.5%, 100+ IBUs). Two hundred local home brewers helped brew the beer. Hopped with Warrior, Cascade, Centennial, Zythos, and Simcoe hops.


Stickmen Brewery (Lake Oswego, OR) offers The Bitter X Triple IPA (10.1%, 134 IBUs. The beer is brewed with classic West Coast IPA hops; Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Centennial.


Two Beers (Seattle, WA) Ascension Triple IPA (14.5%, 100+ IBUs) is a high-octane IPA brewed with Columbus and Galena hops.


Triple IPA HomeBrew Recipes

Pliny The Younger Triple IPA Clone – This five gallon recipe requires over 20 lbs of malt, and 12 ounces of hops. Heavy late-hopping for flavor uses up a massive amount of hops to get the right profile for this flavorful beer.


Knee Deep Simtra Triple IPA Clone – Packed with all the great aromas and flavors of Simcoe and Citra hops. The recipe requires over 20 lbs of malt, and 10 ounces of hops. Plan on aging the beer for at least 8 weeks to let the flavors blend in.
