Been Busted Trying to turn a Vacation into a Beercation? – Learn How to Avoid the Wrath of the Family

Do you constantly get accused of trying to turn a vacation into a Beercation. If you’re a craft beer fan, it is almost too difficult not to do this, with so many great breweries and brewpubs convenient to so many vacation area destinations. Hopefully we can help limit some of those fiery outbursts from the past when teens or spouses busted your secret plans.

Tip 1 – Do Your HomeWork Ahead of Time

Do your homework before the trip, and research where all the good breweries, brewpubs, beer stores, and restaurants with good selections of beer on tap are. Have notes and maps saved on your cell phone or tablet for quick access.

Tip 2 – Hit a High Quality Beer Store Right Away

Finding a high quality beer store and stocking up on beers you’ve been dying to try is a great hedge if your other beer plans fall through. Know exactly where the closest good beer store is, so when you arrive you can go there first while everyone is still euphoric about the trip. Make sure everyone is fed properly beforehand, and if needed stop for a quick bite before the beer store.

Your hotel room will have a small fridge to chill a few beers at a time, or better yet if you have a vacation rental, there will be plenty of room in a large refrigerator.

Tip 3 – Don’t mention anything beer related for the next 24 hours after hitting the beer store – Do everything everyone else wants to do.
Tip 4 – Conveniently Find Yourself Nearby to a Brewpub or Restaurant with a big tap list around Lunch or Dinner Time

I’ve rarely gotten complaints from the kids/wife on Brewpub food, though they will still harass me with “we’re only here because you want to drink the beer” comments. Depending on how long your trip is, you should be able to do this a couple times.

Even better is when you can find an activity like mini golf, or a water-park that is very close to a brewpub.

I found doing brewery tours or visiting beer bars on a family vacation to be too difficult. However on a vacation with just a spouse or a significant other these may fly with some work.

Those are the basics – If you have some other tips please feel free to add them to the comments.

Remember, make sure everyone has fun, and don’t get too carried away with your secret Beercation plans.
