Two Brothers, Funky Yeast, and Oak Barrels in Krebs Oklahoma
Prairie Artisan Ales, a boutique brewery in rural Krebs, Oklahoma is quickly making a name for itself in the craft brewing market, by producing some outstanding Saisons. The small brewery started gaining traction with a Kickstarter campaign this past March, where they raised $24K, or 240% of their initial goal. The campaign attracted nine backer for $1,000 plus donations, who will eventually have beers named after them with original artwork on the labels.
Several beers in the Prairie line-up are fermented with wild Brettanomyces yeast which adds funky and earthy flavors. The Brett yeast adds a nice layer of complexity to the beers, giving them true farmhouse character. Barrel-aging in oak also adds character to many of Prairie’s beer styles.
We recently tried several of their Saisons.
Prairie Hop (8% ABV) is our favorite offering from them. A dry-hopped Saison which is heavily hopped with Simcoe and Citra hops. The beer offers vibrant aromas of mango, peach, and pine. The finish is dry and crisp with smooth bitterness.
If you like hoppy beers and Saisons, we highly recommend you seek this beer out to try it for yourself.
Prairie Ale (7% ABV) is brewed with Pilsner Malt, Wheat, Malt, and Flaked Wheat. Saaz hops are used to add some mild spice and bitterness. The beer is fermented with ale yeast, wine yeast, and wild Brettanomyces yeast.
Prairie Ale pours a pale orange-gold color with a very lively and frothy white head. The beer is highly carbonated with earthy farmhouse flavors and notes of black pepper and sweet tropical fruit. The finish is crisp and refreshing.
A very nice beer to end a hot summer day with.
Prairie Merica (7.5%) is a Single-Hopped Saison brewed with 100% Nelson Sauvin hops, and Pilsner malt. A combination of funky farmhouse aromas, white wine grapes, and fresh crushed gooseberries greets you on your first sip. The flavor profile has a distinct Brett yeast character and classic spicy Saison notes, with some white wine grape flavors. The finish is dry and refreshing.
Prairie Galaxy (8% ABV) is a Dark Farmhouse Saison brewed with Galaxy hops. The beer pours black with a creamy tan head and has aromas of tropical fruit with funky earthy notes. The flavor is fruity with some mild roasty notes, and a very small hint of earthy molasses. The finish is dry with moderate bitterness.
In addition to their great line-up of Saisons, Prairie Artisan Ales also offer some flavorful barrel-aged stouts, including Prairie Noir, a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout, and Prairie Pirate Noir, a Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout.
